StartmeupHK Festival 2017 - The Connected City
Over 5,000 participants were drawn to this year's StartmeupHK Festival.
The event is to showcase Hong Kong's vibrant startup ecosystem for startups and investors all over the world. This year, it covered smart city, FinTech, Internet of Things (IoT), digital health, fashion technology and retail technology, with more than 80 speakers in panel sessions, interactive discussions, competitions and speaking events. The four-day event took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai and at PMQ in Central.
On 17th January, SCC and KPMG co-organized The Connected City at PMQ, discussing the changing dynamics, demographics and growth of megacities, along with the need to make them sustainable. Key talking points included innovations for the next generation of city living, with examples of technology from around the world, including IoT and data analytics that aim to enhance a city's liveability, workability, and the growth in renewable energy.
Besides, SCC also hosted the Startup Village with over 40 startups showcasing their smart city and IoT solutions in the PMQ Courtyard.
According to InvestHK's recent 2016 Startup Profiling Survey, there was a 24% year-on-year increase in startup. Among these, there were around 600 non-Hong Kong founders, mostly from the United States and western Europe, while more than 65 startups were from Mainland China. This reflects on Hong Kong's popularity for overseas startups further afield as a place to do business with the global market.
